Located in the Warehouse District of Downtown Durham, West Village offers the ability to design your life, with historic and contemporary apartment homes and multiple retail spaces nestled into this one-of-a-kind community. West Village is... comprised of nine historic buildings converted into uniquely designed apartments that stay true to much of the buildings' original architecture. These historic Warehouse District buildings pre-date the 1920's and feature industrial-style lofts with exposed brick, hardwood floors, ceilings up to 22 feet high, oversized windows, and original wood beams. West Village grew in 2015 with the addition of it's tenth building, The Moore Building, which features a contemporary construction style complete with open, spacious units featuring clean design elements for a modern luxury feel.

I moved into West Village years ago and the floors were literally rotting and moldy. The leasing office promised that they would fix the issue but ended up just slapping a vinyl floor on the rotting wood. Multiple bandaid fixes where I had to move my entire apartment and uproot everything. I'm allergic to mold but I kept dealing with it, hoping this time it was finally fixed.
After dealing with this for years I tried to transfer out multiple times and the main office just wouldn't simply waive... the $700 transfer fee to move down the hall. Finally they sent in a fourth maintenance crew (who knows if it will work this time) who proceeded to throw all my stuff into my bathtub without informing me, damaging a $400 leather bag and then damaging my $2500 gaming PC (which was no older than 1 and a half days!).

I want to share my experience of living here for the past two months so that future residents can make a more informed decision before touring or leasing here. Overall so far, I have had a negative experience.
The positives of living here are the location, industrial look of the buildings, and Patrick and his maintenance team. Location is unmatched, and if you love old warehouse buildings with character and charm this is the place for you. Patrick and his team were courteous, attentive, and... responsive when management would finally communicate to him.
My experience though started off negative. My apartment was not turned over properly and move-in ready by my move-in date.
I also have not had access to my patio gate for nearly two months. Part of that time was due to the property not fixing the patio gate's broken handle for nearly three weeks despite a work order request being put in immediately. It is the only exit from the backside of my apartment and the patio. In the event of an emergency, if that patio gate was my only option for an exit, I wouldn't have been able to get to safety due to it being inoperable. My only other option would have been to jump over the patio rails, and my patio is several feet above ground level. I thought this would be a safety issue and likely liability to the property, but the response I received from the regional manager was that patios are not a safety requirement onsite. I'm unsure then who would be held responsible if I were to suffer an injury during an emergency because I couldn't properly exit my patio.
Communication and follow up is also not a strength of this property. I was told that due to the size of the community and urgency of requests that are submitted, there may be a delay in responses to emails. If there is a delay, the regional manger suggested that I either call or place a work order request as a follow up. However, my follow ups were for the work order requests I had placed.
The leadership, including the regional manager, would like to work with me on these concerns, so I am hopeful. This place has the potential to be awesome, but not with the current management. As of now, I can't confidently recommend to live here.

AVOID THIS PLACE! We lived here for a year and our time was riddled with issues:
1) When we moved in our unit had a non-functioning dishwasher and it took 2 months to get a functioning one.
2) For multiple months we had issues with our bill with erroneous charges that took weeks to resolve and was a massive hassle.
3) Trash system is super inconvenient and sometimes the trash was not even picked up so to avoid fines for leaving trash out we’d have to use the outside skips that were just... overflowing trash into the street for days
4) We had a broken AC system for most of the summer in 95+ degree heat and took us a 1.5+ months to get a new unit. 5) just in general it took way too long for maintenance to address requests (we’re talking 2+ weeks for the most simple requests)
6) we had termites in our ceiling that just began raining down on us
7) the complex has two pools and one of them didn’t even open the entire year (and that was in the newer part of the complex) despite promises it would be open.
8) it was only when our mover came to move our stuff in the apartment and he pointed it out that we found there was black mold under every window (which would always leak into the apartment on rainy days)

Generally a mediocre apartment complex with the benefit of a great location and the detriment of a completely inattentive and incompetent staff. Amenities aren't great but are fine, maintenance responsiveness is so-so, cost isn't amazing but not terrible for the location. However, the leasing office either doesn't know how to or just refuses to do their jobs. We have never received a useful answer from them (if we receive an answer at all) when calling or emailing them, and the office is only... open in person from like 10am-4pm, and not during lunch, so you have to take time off work to talk to them, and even then they don't know what they're doing enough to help.
All of these reviews on here that specifically mention how helpful a specific person was are very clearly fake reviews left by West Village to bump up their rating. They all sound exactly the same and they're clearly corporate jargon.

I have been trying to contact them for 6 weeks —- I had two virtual tours scheduled…both of which never happened because the agent never followed up with a link to do the tour. When I reached out, I got zero response. I figured I would try to start fresh and re-enter my information —-bad mistake. Since then, I get two emails per day saying “someone will reach out soon!” but no one ever does! I have since been calling to try to remove myself from the list because I’m obviously not going to live... somewhere with such terrible communication. But I can’t even do that! The front desk people have no idea what to do. They also don’t give any information about their managers. I’ve tried calling the managers but they are never working! There was one time I got a hold of someone; she was very apologetic and I felt I could rely on her. She “set up” a virtual tour for me for the next day and said the assistant manager Stephanie would reach out later that day. Never happened and therefore of course the tour never happened. I called back another day asking for Stephanie — I was told she would email me Info within 45 min. Again…never happened. I’m sorry - I know everyone is busy but we are too! I can’t keep calling every hour to catch you at work — if you guys even do that?? I’m a physician and I still find time to call the people I promise I’ll call. Please get your act together. And remove me from your email list. Thanks
